Cool Ways to Spend Your Free Time in Whitefish

There's a particular kind of tired that comes after a morning on horseback. The good kind. The kind where your legs are a little wobbly, your hair smells like pine, and you have exactly zero interest in checking email.

At the Bar W, we build the week so that feeling has room to breathe. Trail rides, arena time, archery, roping, fly casting, and then evenings that keep going, from line dancing and huckleberry cocktails to whiskey tasting and campfires up on Spencer Ridge.

But here's the thing our guests figure out fast: downtown Whitefish is about ten minutes from the ranch gate. And it is charming - a real mountain town with an independent bookstore energy, a woman-owned distillery that serves up some of the finest cocktails in town, and a bakery making macarons that would hold their own in Paris.

So if you find yourself with a free afternoon, a slow morning, or a night when you'd rather trade the boot scoot for a rooftop cocktail, here's where to point yourself.

Coffee & Something Sweet

Take a coffee roasting tour at Montana Coffee Traders. They've been roasting in the Flathead Valley since 1981, and their roastery just south of town runs a tour that walks you through where the beans come from, how they're roasted, and why it matters. Tours run Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and reservations are required. Call (406) 862-7628 to grab a spot. If the timing doesn't work, their downtown café at 110 Central Ave is the easiest coffee-and-a-pastry stop in Whitefish.

Fleur Bake Shop. French-style pastries and specialty cakes in a small mountain town. It's the kind of pleasant surprise Whitefish specializes in. Don't leave without macarons.

Sweet Peaks Ice Cream. Homemade ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt. Order the huckleberry. We're not going to pretend to be neutral about this.

Worth knowing: Swift Creek Cafe is a local favorite family-owned breakfast and lunch café in the heart of downtown Whitefish.  Known for its warm hospitality, scratch-made cuisine, the café serves creative comfort food that will impress even the most discriminating palette. Highly Recommended!!

Shopping That's Actually Worth Your Afternoon

Kemo Sabe. Known for its handcrafted cowboy hats, boots, buckles, and Western-inspired apparel, this store offers a shopping experience that's as memorable as the products themselves. Whether you're ready to invest in a custom hat or just want to browse one of Whitefish's most iconic shops, it's worth stepping inside.

The Toggery. Family-owned, and genuinely the best all-around shop in town — women's clothing, shoes, outdoor gear, and gifts under one roof. If you forgot a layer for chilly ranch evenings, this is your fix. Bonus: it connects to Montana Coffee Traders downtown, so you can shop and caffeinate in one stop.

Sage & Cedar. A little apothecary-meets-boutique on Central Ave, full of essential oils, handmade candles, natural skincare and women's clothing. You can blend your own custom fragrance here, which makes for a souvenir nobody else will have.

Sappari Design & Trovare are two locally owned boutiques worth a visit. Browse sophisticated fashion, jewelry, accessories, artisan furniture, and home décor at Sappari Design, then stop by Trovare for quality cookware, kitchen essentials, and gourmet finds.

Shopping for little ones back home or bringing them along? Sprouts Children's Boutique and Imagination Station are both downtown.

Treat Yourself: Spa & Wellness

The Spa at Whitefish Lake. Lakeside at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Come early for your appointment and use the steam room, hot tubs and lounge—the pre-treatment hour is half the point. Couples and side-by-side treatments available if you've brought a partner or a friend.

The Spa at Firebrand. Right downtown, so it slots neatly between shopping and dinner. Massage and treatment rooms plus a rooftop hot tub with mountain views.

BusyBee IV. A health and wellness studio doing IV hydration and vitamin therapy—popular with people who've been at altitude, on horseback, and possibly up a little late around the campfire. Recovery, Montana-style.

Move Differently (Your Hips Will Thank You)

Riding uses muscles you forgot you had. An hour of stretching mid-week is a genuinely great idea.

LOVE Yoga & Barre. Hot yoga and barre classes if you want something with more heat and more sweat.

Delia Pilates. Small-group and reformer work with knowledgeable instructors—ideal if your lower back has opinions about day three of trail rides.

Craft Drinks with a Sense of Place

Herb & Omni. For a special night out, book a table at Herb & Omni. This intimate downtown restaurant serves refined, seasonal dishes inspired by local ingredients, alongside an excellent cocktail and wine program. Chef Earl Reynolds has twice been nominated for the James Beard Award for Best Chef, and one dinner here is enough to understand why. It's a true culinary highlight of Whitefish.

Spotted Bear Spirits. A small-batch distillery on Railway Street, across from Depot Park, making gin, vodka, whiskey and huckleberry spirits with local and organic ingredients. Their cocktails have won Best in the Flathead Valley more than once, and their coffee liqueur is made with Montana Coffee Traders beans—a nice full-circle moment if you did the roastery tour.
Note the early close: last call is around 7:40 p.m., so this is a pre-dinner stop, not a nightcap.

Bonsai Brewery. Tucked into a residential block on Wisconsin Ave with a big, leafy beer garden, picnic tables, string lights and a backyard-party feel. Around ten handcrafted beers on tap, a from-scratch food menu with real vegetarian options, live music and trivia nights, and dogs everywhere. If you only do one brewery, do this one.

Drinks in the lounge at Larch House. Whitefish's newest and most design-forward hotel, on East 1st Street, and you don't need to be staying there to enjoy it. The lounge at Enga, their alpine-inspired restaurant, opens at 4 p.m. with floor-to-ceiling windows, a courtyard and Boulder Garden with an outdoor fire, and works from the hotel's private art collection on the walls. It's the most elevated cocktail in town, and a lovely change of pace from a week of denim and dust. Their Antler Room cocktail bar and rooftop Terrace are on the way, so it's worth checking what's open when you visit.

If you're staying out later: The Great Northern Bar & Grill on Central has live music Thursday through Saturday (and most nights in summer), plus pool and shuffleboard. Craggy Range is the relaxed choice for a happy-hour drink and a bison burger.

Two Nights Worth Planning Around

Most of this list works whenever you're free. You have to plan these two, but they're worth building your week around.

The Whitefish Farmers Market — Tuesdays, 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Central Avenue at Depot Park, June 2 through September 29. Local farms, food trucks, live music, and craft vendors selling jewelry, pottery, leatherwork and skincare. Come for Flathead cherry season in July or wild huckleberries in August and you'll understand why locals structure their summers around this. It's the single best hour to be downtown all week.

Whitefish Gallery Nights — First Thursday, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Downtown galleries and shops stay open late for featured artist exhibits, live music and light refreshments. Free, walkable, and genuinely social, you'll end up talking to the artists. 2026 dates: May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3 and October 1. Stop into Nancy Cawdrey's gallery for the color alone.

A quick heads-up: both of these overlap with ranch dinner and the evening activity, so mention it to our team when you arrive and we'll help you plan around it.

Try Something You've Never Done Before

eFoil on Whitefish Lake with EFOIL X. An electric hydrofoil board that lifts you up off the surface so you're silently flying above the water. Sessions run about 90 minutes with on-shore instruction first, and they're built for first-timers. It is the single most fun thing you can do on that lake, and the photos are ridiculous.

One Perfect Free Afternoon

If you want it mapped out:

1:00: Drive into town, park once, walk everywhere
1:15: Coffee and a pastry at Montana Coffee Traders
2:00: Browse The Toggery and Sage & Cedar
3:30: Massage at the Spa at Firebrand
5:15: Cocktail at Spotted Bear Spirits before they call last round
6:30: Back to the ranch, hair still damp, in time for dinner and whatever the crew has planned for the evening

The Best Part? You Don't Have to Plan Any of It

The beauty of a week at the Bar W is that your days are already handled—the horses, the meals, the campfires, the people you'll still be texting six months later. Whitefish is just there when you want it, ten minutes down the road.

Come ride with us. Then go get the ice cream.
